People love their dogs so much there is a special day just to spoil them! Find out new ways to spoil your dog on national dog day.

So what day is National Dog Day, and how did we get a day dedicated entirely to dogs? Well, National Dog Day is on August 26th every year and is a holiday that came about in 2004 thanks to the work of an animal rescue advocate, conservationist, and author by the name of Colleen Paige.

Colleen wanted to bring more attention to all of the amazing things dogs do for us every day and find a way for us to give back to them! There are seeing eye dogs, military and police working dogs, search and rescue dogs, herding dogs, farm dogs, and so many more. And all these dogs ask for in return is some love. She also wanted more people to recognize the sheer number of furry friends in rescues and local animal shelters in need of a loving home.

While not every day is national spoil your dog day, our dogs probably think every day should be! So here are some fun ways to celebrate and spoil your pup on National Dog Day this year.

Spend Quality Time

One of the best ways to celebrate National Dog Day with your dog is also one of the easiest. Just spend some quality time with your pup!

It doesn't matter what you do, whether it's playing a game of fetch in the backyard, going for a walk, or just snuggling up together on the couch to watch a movie. Your four-legged friend will absolutely love it. If you have other dogs, you can spend time together as a group or give one dog at a time your full attention!

Get Outside

Another great way to spoil your pup is by getting outside. You can do anything from going for a long walk, hiking, going to a park to have a picnic, or even spending the day at the beach! Sometimes life gets so busy that we forget about the simple things. Not only is it good for our dogs to spend time outdoors, but it is great for our human health as well!

While you don't have to buy the whole store, it can be really fun to take your pup and just go walk around your favorite pet store. The easiest way to start is with a simple back rub. Give long strokes down your dog's back, avoiding touching the spine directly. You can also try rubbing your dog's forehead and head, neck, shoulders, and even your dog's hind legs. Start gently and see what your dog likes best!

Another great way to spoil your dog is to plan a playdate! Does your dog have a best friend that they haven't seen in a while? Invite them over to play in the yard or to go for a hike together. Your dog will love seeing and playing with an old friend!

Think about what type of toy your dog enjoys playing with the most, such as a tug toy or a fetch toy. You can also get creative and make a puzzle toy or a treat-dispensing toy. Cut the materials into the desired length and shape, and then knot or braid them together to create their new toy.

For example, you could tie some old kitchen towels in a couple of knots to form a ball shape and stuff some treats inside. Your dog can sniff out the treats and enjoy a little snack. You'll want the toy sturdy enough to withstand your dog's playtime, but also remember to supervise.
